From the Highlands to Kimironko
In the land of a thousand hills, every morning begins with a story. If you’ve ever walked through the vibrant streets of Kimironko or caught the aroma of a fresh brew near Kwa-Mushimire, you know that coffee is more than just a drink in Rwanda, it is our heartbeat.
But how does a cherry growing on a misty mountainside in the Western Province become the perfect latte at Café Favorie? Join us as we trace the journey of the world’s finest beans from the volcanic soil to your favorite neighborhood cup.
1. The High-Altitude Secrets: Where the Magic Begins
Rwanda is home to some of the highest coffee-growing altitudes in the world, often reaching over 2,000 meters above sea level. This isn’t just a fun fact; it’s the secret to the flavor. High altitude means the coffee cherries grow slower, allowing them to develop complex sugars and a “bright” acidity that coffee lovers crave.
The Major Growing Regions:
- Lake Kivu (West): Known for rich, full-bodied beans with notes of chocolate and citrus.
- Virunga (North): Where the volcanic soil produces beans with a clean, crisp finish.
- Huye & Nyamasheke (South): Famous for floral aromas and a honey-like sweetness.
At Café Favorie, we source 100% Rwandan Arabica, specifically the Red Bourbon variety, often called the “Queen of Arabica”—to ensure every sip supports our local cooperatives and farmers.
2. From Farm to Cup: A Meticulous Journey
The journey from a highland farm to Kimironko is a labor of love. Unlike mass-produced coffee, Rwandan specialty coffee is hand-picked. Farmers only select the cherries that are “blood-red” ripe.
Once picked, the beans go through a rigorous process:
- Washing: The cherries are sent to local washing stations where the fruit is removed.
- Sun-Drying: The beans are laid out on raised “African beds” to dry under the Rwandan sun.
- Roasting: This is where the chemistry happens. We roast our beans to a precise Medium Roast to preserve the delicate floral notes while bringing out a rich, toasted caramel finish.
3. Coffee Culture in the Heart of Kigali
While the coffee grows in the highlands, it lives in Kigali. The coffee scene in our capital has transformed into a world-class experience, and Kimironko is at the center of it.
Whether you are a digital nomad looking for a workspace with fast WiFi or a family catching up over pastries, the cafe has become the new “village square.” At our location in Kwa-Mushimire, we pride ourselves on being more than just a shop; we are a community hub where the tradition of Rwandan hospitality (Agaciro) meets modern coffee craft.
4. How to Taste Like a Pro
Next time you visit us, try to look for these “tasting notes” in your cup:
- Aroma: Do you smell jasmine or orange blossom?
- Acidity: Does it have a bright, zingy feel like a lemon or a green apple?
- Body: Is it light and tea-like, or creamy and heavy like chocolate?
Pro Tip: Try our pour-over coffee black first. It’s the best way to experience the “terroir” (the taste of the land) of the specific region the beans came from.
